Have you ever dreamed of starting your own business?
I certainly had, but it never seemed to be “the right time”. But when I got made redundant from my job as a marketing manager while on maternity leave, the decision was made for me. No more asking myself when I should start my own business – the time was now! I needed to earn an income but also wanted to enjoy spending time with my son, and so I bit the bullet, put the word out and soon enough Teapot Communications was born.
There are of course downsides to being self-employed: the pressure is completely on you to bring in the money, and in the first few years of running your own business your income and the amount of work you bring in can be very inconsistent. Some people hate working on their own. However, for me personally I love this lifestyle choice.
HERE ARE FIVE REASONS YOU SHOULD START YOUR OWN BUSINESS:
1. YOU’RE THE BOSS!
OK, it’s quite scary being 100% responsible for bringing in that money, but also… you’re the boss! Want to change your business logo? No problem. Want to switch suppliers? Go for it. The only person you’re accountable to when it comes to the success of your business is yourself, and while some people find that daunting I personally find it really empowering.
2. YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU LOVE
I’m going to hedge my bets and say that there isn’t a single job in the world that doesn’t have at least a couple of aspects of it which are a bit tedious. But on the whole, if you want to run your own business you have the freedom to focus on areas which give you personal satisfaction as well as on a professional level. For me, that’s helping small businesses and sole traders with marketing; an area which may not be, ahem, their cup of tea! Making my clients happy and helping them navigate the world of marketing is incredibly rewarding. And now I get to do it every day!
3. YOU CAN CHOOSE YOUR OWN WORKING HOURS
For me, this was really important because I wanted the flexibility to fit my workload around my family. For you, having the flexibility of being your own boss might mean that you can take a 2pm yoga class, or catch a movie in the middle of the day. You can work when (and where) you want, as long as the work is done.
4. YOU LEARN NEW THINGS EVERY DAY
As in any industry, I need to do a fair amount of professional development to stay on top of my game and do the best job for my clients. I’m learning things that I’d never even thought about before starting my own business. It’s very satisfying.
5. YOU’RE NOT ALONE – SUPPORT IS OUT THERE!
I always cringe a bit at the term “find your tribe”, but it really does help to find the support of those in the same boat as you. You can learn SO much from talking to people you know who run their own business and swapping notes or asking for advice.
There are also some really fantastic online communities filled with people who can offer advice about running your own business based on their own experiences. As a working mum based in Perth, I have personally benefitted from the Mums with Hustle and Perth Girlbosses Facebook groups, in addition to the website Flying Solo which is filled to the brim with great advice for those who want to run their own show.
6. YOU CAN WORK IN YOUR PJs/YOGA PANTS.
A bonus sixth reason why you should run your own business – and one that would make my mum (who also works from home and gets “properly” dressed up every single day) cringe! I’m not saying I work in my yoga pants all the time… but I do like to be comfortable while I make my money! Hey, it’s just another thing you that couldn’t do if you worked in an office with other people. Guilty as charged.
